Bodybuilding Motivation – Combating the Blues

Different people get their bodybuilding motivations from different places. I have a few rules that help me combat any negative or lazy feelings I get. In this article I’ll let you in on a few secrets for motivating yourself to get in the mood to weight lift.

So many people get down in the winter. If you have the winter blues and are feeling down and out, go for a walk. You don’t need to go for a 10 mile run to feel invigorated, just get outside and take in the fresh air. Some of the most fresh, clean air is winter air. The wind is blowing, the air is crisp, so get out there. Just remember to dress in layers and protect your exposed skin.

Don’t sit around the house and feel sorry for yourself. Get up, get out and get going!

When I first started lifting about twenty years ago, I did not know what I was doing. But being a teenager, I was not about to ask for help. This attitude almost cost me dearly.

Walking into the gym, completely on my own, I loaded a bar with about 220lbs and told myself I was about to squat. What I didn’t realize, was that I could not lift this weight, I had never even squatted before.

I stepped under the weight and put it on my shoulders. I knew the weight was too heavy, but I proceeded anyway, because I did not want to back down and take some weight off, because someone might notice and think I was a wimp.

Stepping back from the rack, I started to lower myself in squat form. I went down, but I could not push back up. The weight gained momentum and I leaned forward and the weight flew over my head and landed on the floor, with a loud crash. Talk about a feeling of shame. What I should have been feeling was lucky, because I could have been seriously hurt.

After that moment, I knew that I needed help and I made friends with an experienced lifter who set me straight.

The point of this story is to always ask for help in the gym if you are not sure of something. Fellow lifters are usually always happy to help. If you happen to ask the wrong person, just shrug it off and move on to the next person. Who knows, you may make a friend for life.
